Improving arrival, access and staff
spaces at Northumberland College
in a live college environment
The refurbishment at Northumberland College focused on transforming the ground floor reception, back office and welfare facilities to create a more open, welcoming and contemporary entrance while improving staff spaces.
Delivered within a live school environment, the works required careful phasing, safe segregation and close coordination to minimise disruption to daily activity. Internal works were sequenced around college operations, including a planned two-week reception closure to allow installation of new flooring and bespoke joinery. All site personnel, including the site foreman, operated with enhanced DBS clearance, and the project was completed safely while maintaining a strong focus on quality.
The scope included full strip-out of the existing reception, offices and WCs, followed by a Cat-B fit-out incorporating new mechanical and electrical installations (client-designed), mixed flooring finishes, installation of a bespoke disabled lift, new glass partitions forming meeting areas, standard ceilings and partitions, bespoke joinery, internal doors and signage. Works also included adjustments to the external curtain walling and careful integration of new elements within the existing structure. The completed space provides a clearer, more welcoming arrival experience alongside improved staff facilities, supporting the college’s day-to-day use and future operation.

What a fabulous experience working alongside Aptus has been. Nothing has been too much trouble, the customer always appears to come first and the attitude of your Site Manager has been amazing. I like things right and the site manager takes immense pride in the job he’s managing. I wish all contractors we employed adopted a similar approach to that demonstrated by Aptus and I’m now looking forward to the next time Aptus are on site.
