41 Room student accommodation
refurbishment at
Durham University

Refurbishment, fit out and furniture for a 1960s single-storey accommodation block for Durham  Hatfield College’s postgraduate students. The building was transformed into a low-carbon residential facility with 41 ensuite bedrooms, a wardens flat and shared spaces including kitchen, dining, laundry and a landscaped courtyard. Original parquet flooring was carefully restored and reused. Externally, the building was upgraded with a new roof, windows, entrance portico and improved courtyard. Decarbonisation was delivered through removal of gas, installation of air source heat pumps and insulated external render. Structural steel enabled wider openings, larger rooms and supported new roof plant and curtain walling, improving both performance and long-term usability.
